|
Mohiniyattom literally means the dance of the enchantress. It is the classical dance form of Kerala. Slow, graceful, swaying movements of the body, highly emotive eye and hand gestures are unique to this dance form. The simple, elegant gold-filigreed pure white or ivory cotton costume worn by the dancer is akin to the traditional attire of the women of Kerala. |

Mohiniyattam is born in Kerala. It is as if the dance had sprung from its landscape and seascape. The graceful body movements of the dancer is in tune with Nature. It's circular and semicircular movements harmonise with the ballet of the waves, wind-flown paddy fields and swaying slender palms in rain and sun. Mohiniyattam is a solo dance (in a single costume ) in which the striking features is the musical melody and rhythmical swaying of the dancer from side to side and the smooth and unbroken flow of the body movement. The dance is focused essentially on moods and emotions. |

| Should be able to speak English. Genuine interest in dance and acquaintance with any other form of dance will be an added advantage. |

The student is initiated into the fundamentals, historical setting of the dance form and the theoretical framework. Then the student learns the principles of Abhinaya, followed by study of music and nattuvangam. The principles of rhythmic patterns and allied subjects are also studied during the course. Later the student will enjoy a more in-depth training in the grammar of the form, moving into learning classical texts and acclimatising with contemporary initiatives of the form. At the end of the programme, the student will be awarded a Certificate testifying to the syllabus and structure of the training course. |
